Next attach the header stud and nail the top cripple studs into the king stud spacing them the same as the bottom cripple studs. Stud spacing is 16 apart. Sometimes these are two by six studs turned on edge. The holes on the door track are 12 apart.

But there are also horizontal framing members located above and below door and window openings. Use the stud finder to locate and mark the studs above the door. For single doors start about three or four inches up on the hinge side of the door opening and continue for the length of the backer board. In other words zero of the holes aligned with studs.
